DURHAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE – The University of New Hampshire Interest Group has earned the right to call itself a Colony of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity.

The Pledge and Colonization Ceremony took place on the UNH campus Sunday, December 14, 2008. The event was attended by men from the Epsilon Mu Chapter at Bentley and Alex Wright, Central Michigan ’08, who lives in Maine and was home on break. The Colony’s Grand Chapter Advisor Adam Miller, Central Michigan ‘97 and Matt Maurer, Bowling Green ’03 also participated.

The Colony was first recognized in September 2008 as an Interest Group. The members of a local Fraternity Chi Phi Alpha had approached Alpha Sigma Phi in the spring of 2008 about becoming a part of the national fraternity. Undergraduates, UNH Administration, and Fraternity Staff have worked tirelessly since September to change their culture and become officially recognized by the University. Lead by undergraduates Will Frattini and Justin Dalbeare, the undergraduates have met every expectation laid before them. Not only have they worked to get their operations in order, but they’ve also participated in interfraternal and community events – gaining notoriety as true gentlemen out to improve Greek standards at UNH.

UNH is considered a re-start for the Fraternity. Delta Pi Epsilon, the original local group was formed in 1921 by twelve students. In 1922, they purchased a facility in Durham, New Hampshire, for use as a meeting hall. The group was later charted as the Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Pi National Fraternity on January 31, 1931. A house with living quarters was obtained in 1933, but only fifteen members returned in the Fall of 1934. The Chapter failed due to the financial overhead it was unable to meet during the Depression. Fifty-eight members were initiated into Alpha Kappa Pi. Alpha Kappa Pi merged with Alpha Sigma Phi in 1946 and in accordance with the merger all members of Alpha Kappa Pi were given membership status in Alpha Sigma Phi.

The Colony is on track to be chartered in the fall of 2009. Currently the Grand Chapter Advisor is looking for additional volunteers to help assist the Colony. If you are interested and live in New Hampshire or the Boston area, please contact Fraternity Headquarters.
