We could all use a little coaching from time to time. Here are suggestions to ensure that you represent the best of Alpha Sigma Phi on your campus.
- Never say “Frat.” Use of this colloquialism is an indication that you are not properly familiar with fraternity usage. Always refer to Alpha Sigma Phi as your Fraternity and show other Greek letter organizations the same consideration.
- Learn to distinguish between the various Latin terms relating to graduates. A male graduate is an alumnus, the plural of which is alumni. The corresponding words for women are alumna and alumnae.
- In Alpha Sigma Phi the plural of brother is brothers. The use of brethren is archaic.
- When introducing one member of Alpha Sigma Phi to another, it is proper to address each as brother. A pledge is introduced as pledge brother.
- When a pledge is initiated into the Fraternity, we speak of his initiation, not activation or brothering up.
- Members of Alpha Sigma Phi are generally known as Alpha Sigs, although most are full name is most common. Likewise, most other leading fraternities have adopted nicknames as: Phi Delta, SAEs, Betas, Sigs, Delts, Phi Gams, ATOs, Dekes, etc.
