A vision without purpose is like a house without a foundation…unstable, and susceptible to collapse at the slightest environmental change. Thankfully for Alpha Sigma Phi, our purpose has long been established…to Better the Man. But what does it mean to better the man, and how will this lofty goal be achieved? Our purpose statement attempts to answer these fundamental questions:
To Better the Man,
through the creation and perpetuation of brotherhood
founded upon the values of character…
Silence, Charity, Purity, Honor, Patriotism
Alpha Sigma Phi provides its undergraduate members with the ability to become better men through participation in a values-based life and leadership laboratory. Through living and growing with a diverse group of brothers, these young men learn about themselves…their true characters…and how to develop and implement shared goals for their chapter, the fraternity, their campus, and their community. They are afforded the opportunity to experiment with and practice the attributes of character that lead to success and that will serve them throughout their lives. Vince Lombardi said, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of the field of endeavor.” Alpha Sigma Phi provides the
opportunity to learn how to commit to excellence.
Brothers in Alpha Sigma Phi are pledged to be seekers of truth. As such, we should search for truth and recognize it wherever it is found. This is the path to wisdom.
Therefore, to better the man we should strive to put our brothers on the path to being truly wise men. Our Values: Silence, Charity, Purity, Honor and Patriotism are all focused towards this goal. Being wise is a lifelong pursuit, and the only path to true happiness. If we can inspire young men to pursue wisdom…not just knowledge, but knowledge based on truths that enlighten the spirit, then they will avoid the trap that so many of our countrymen have fallen into: the pursuit of pleasure. The pursuit of pleasure, as an end in itself, tends to result in a general weakening of the fibers of will, intelligence and spirit.
Our Purpose describes a man of character…a gentleman in the noblest sense of that word…an Alpha Sig!
