Volunteers and Chapter Leaders Descend on Indianapolis |

Undergraduate leaders from nearly all of the Fraternity’s Chapters, Colonies, and Interest Groups recently made their way to Indianapolis along with two dozen chapter, colony, and interest group volunteers to participant in a two and half day program. The Fraternity’s Grand Council also participated in the weekend’s programming and used their time together to conduct a face-to-face meeting. The Presidents’ Academy of Leadership took place February 5 – 8, 2009.
Academy’s curriculum is designed to give both the undergraduate and volunteer a hands-on educational experience. Undergraduates had the opportunity to assess their leadership style using StrengthsQuest a GALLUP organization assessment tool. They spent time understanding their role and developing an action plan that supports the Fraternity’s Values and Purpose as an organization. Educational sessions combined with interactive discussions and the opportunity to learn more about the Fraternity and themselves left them feeling engaged with a sense of purpose.
The Fraternity’s Strategic Vision calls for increased alumni volunteerism and engagement with the Fraternity. History has taught us that successful chapters occur when a strong foundation of engaged volunteers exists.
While there have been breakout sessions for advisors during Academy, this year’s curriculum focused on creating momentum: for themselves, their Chapter Councils, those also engaged as volunteers at the local level, and for the Chapter. Sessions included coaching and mentoring undergraduate leaders, putting recruitment skills into practice, and higher-level leadership discussions.
