FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 9, 2009 | 2:00 PM EST
WINSTON SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA – Until 1922 fraternities were banned at Wake Forest University. Shortly after removal of the ban, Lambda Tau was organized. In 1931, Lambda Tau petitioned Alpha Kappa Pi for a charter. On May 18, 1932, the chapter was installed as Chi of Alpha Kappa Pi by members of Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Pi at North Carolina State University. Alpha Kappa Pi was the third national fraternity chartered at Wake Forest. The first Alpha Kappa Pi house was on South Main Street, Wake Forest. With the merger of Alpha Sigma Phi and Alpha Kappa Pi the chapter became to Beta Mu Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Twenty members were pledged in the first ceremony. Early on our Chapter had the distinction of recruiting a 35 man pledge class in the fall of 1949. It was the largest of any Wake Forest fraternity at the time.
Sixty years later Alpha Sigma Phi is breaking records again with a 38 man pledge class this spring. In late February, members from Clemson, Virginia Tech., Presbyterian, UNC-Charlotte, and Appalachian State joined Matt Humberger, Bowling Green ’03 and Alex Bauer, Purdue ’05 from Fraternity Headquarters to help Wake Forest get back on its feet. The Wake Forest Chapter has been open for 77 continuous years.
Plans are in place to conduct the initiation ceremony on Saturday, March 21, 2009. Those interested in participating should contact Alex Bauer at Fraternity Headquarters. Without the support of those who came to Wake Forest in February a success this big would not have been possible.
