ROCHESTER, MICHIGAN – Alpha Sigma Phi will start two new Interest Groups this fall in the metro Detroit area. One Interest Group at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and the second at Wayne State University, formally the Beta Tau Chapter in Detroit, Michigan.
Oakland University currently recognizes nine fraternities and sororities. The University celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007. Oakland University was created in 1957 when the late Alfred and Matilda Dodge Wilson donated $2 million and their 1,500-acre estate to Michigan State University to start a new college in Oakland County. Named Michigan State University - Oakland, the college enrolled its first students in 1959. As a member of NCAA Division I athletics and the Mid-Continent Conference, Oakland's Golden Grizzlies boast 34 Mid-Continent Conference championships and regular season titles, and 17 NCAA championship appearances. More than half of all student-athletes maintain a GPA over 3.0.
Wayne State University is an outgrowth of the merger of several older institutions in 1956. The older institutions were the Detroit Medical College, founded in 1868; Detroit Normal School, founded 1881; Colleges of the City of Detroit, founded 1933, and Wayne University, founded 1934. A local called Psi Delta was organized by nine students in the summer of 1934. In November of 1937 the fraternity submitted a petition to Alpha Kappa Pi, and it was chartered as Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Pi in ceremonies at Toledo University's Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter on February 12, 1938.
In 1946 the chapter designation was changed to Beta Tau of Alpha Sigma Phi. In the Spring of 1946 a colony of Alpha Gamma Upsilon fraternity was organized at Wayne State University. On May 4, 1947, it was installed as Eta of Alpha Gamma Upsilon. Beta Tau chapter initiated 528 members before becoming inactive in 1972.
The addition of these two chapters would complement the Gamma Psi Chapter at Lawrence Technological University which is also located in the metro Detroit area. The Gamma Psi Chapter has really flourished in recent years and with more than 1,700 alumni living within 60 miles of both Oakland University and Wayne State the Fraternity is confident we can create healthy vibrant chapters.
The Fraternity is now looking to form a Chapter Council and select a Grand Chapter Advisor before the start of the fall semester. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Denis Beaudoin, Director of Volunteer Initiatives at
