2009 Scholarship Recipients Announced |

CARMEL, INDIANA – This week the Fraternity will begin dispensing close to $20,000 in undergraduate and graduate scholarships. This year’s pool of applicants were strong and diverse. The National Scholarship Committee chaired by Dr. Larry E. Grimes, Bethany ’61 reviewed nearly 100 applicants. The following individuals were awarded scholarships:
Scholar of the Year
First awarded in 1956; this award is the most prestigious scholarship the Fraternity bestows. Its recipient is always an undergraduate brother with an impeccable academic record, noted service to the community and Fraternity, and positions of distinction within his chapter.

Howard L. Kleinoeder Graduate Scholarship Recipients
Named to honor Brother Howard Kleinoeder, Washington ’35, who donated 6.4 million dollars to the Educational Foundation upon his passing into Omega Chapter in 1990. This scholarship is presented to brothers pursuing graduate level degrees at accredited institutions. It is customary to award several Kleinoeder Scholarships.

Friends of Alpha Gamma Scholarship Recipient
Established by Alpha Gamma Chapter (Carnegie-Mellon) friends and brothers. This award is given annually to one undergraduate brother majoring in science that has completed six full semesters or equivalent of study and has the highest overall GPA of all applicants.

Friends of Rho Scholarship Recipient
Endowed by brothers and friends of Rho Chapter (University of Minnesota). This award is presented annually to one undergraduate brother who demonstrates outstanding scholarship in liberal arts during his first three years of study.

Grant-in-Aid Recipients
These grants are presented to undergraduate men who demonstrate a strong financial need as well as a commitment to academics, service, and the Fraternity. It is customary to award several grants-in-aid.

Scholarship Recipients
These general scholarships are presented to undergraduate men who display a strong commitment to academics, service, and the Fraternity, but may not have a strong demonstrated financial need. These awards are meant to recognize men with strong commitment to academics, service, and Fraternity who don’t necessarily rise to the level of a named scholarship. It is customary to award several Alpha Sig Scholarships.
