DETROIT, MICHIGAN – On Thursday, September 24, 2009, the Fraternity established a second colony in the metro Detroit area at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Efforts at Wayne State University first began on September 12, 2009.
The Pledge and Colonization Ceremony took place on the Wayne State campus on Thursday, September 24, 2009. Twenty-five men participated in the ceremony. The event was attended by several area alumni.
Wayne State University is an outgrowth of the merger of several older institutions in 1956. The older institutions were the Detroit Medical College, founded in 1868; Detroit Normal School, founded 1881; Colleges of the City of Detroit, founded 1933, and Wayne University, founded 1934. A local called Psi Delta was organized by nine students in the summer of 1934. In November of 1937 the fraternity submitted a petition to Alpha Kappa Pi, and it was chartered as Alpha Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Pi in ceremonies at Toledo University's Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter on February 12, 1938.
In 1946 the chapter designation was changed to Beta Tau of Alpha Sigma Phi. In the spring of 1946 a colony of Alpha Gamma Upsilon fraternity was organized at Wayne State University. On May 4, 1947, it was installed as Eta of Alpha Gamma Upsilon. Beta Tau chapter initiated 528 members before becoming inactive in 1972.
The early stages of a Chapter Council are in place at Wayne State. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Denis Beaudoin, Director of Volunteer Initiatives at
