CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA – Our chapter at Clemson Univer¬sity takes its relationship with the community pretty seriously.

So seriously, they even initiated the Mayor.

Larry Abernathy, Clemson ’10, is one of Epsilon Upsilon’s newest brothers. Each year, the Chapter invites an education-related speaker to address the brotherhood. This year, it was the 30-year mayor of the town of Clemson, and a long-time professor on campus. Former HSP Trey Robinson, Clemson ’08, took one of Brother Abernathy’s classes and asked him to speak.

To say he was a hit is an understatement.

“We really thought he was inspirational,” says Dan Mills, Clemson ’08, current HSP. “He was scheduled to be with us for an hour, but he ended up being there for three. All the brothers enjoyed him.

“We thought he had to be a member of a fraternity, but when we asked, he said he wasn’t and we invited him to become an Alpha Sig. It was great when he said yes!”

Brother Abernathy attended Clemson and is close friends with the university president, James Barker. One of his signature accomplishments as mayor has been to forge closer ties between the town and university, even creating a bus transportation system that links the university with other Clemson-area institutions of higher education.

“He’s so close to what’s happening on campus that he played an important role in helping our chapter get its house,” Dan says. “We’re very excited to have him as a brother. He’ll be a good part of our chapter life for years.”
