ITHACA, NEW YORK – Sometimes even small gestures have a huge impact. At least that’s the belief of Edward Kokkelenberg, IIT ’54, Grand Chapter Advisor for the Iota Chapter at Cornell University.
Each year the Ithaca Rotary Club acquires books for Rotary’s CNY Books for the World project, which provides much needed technical texts and children’s books to African communities where English is the primary language for science and medicine.
This year the club had early access to the Cornell University Friends of the Library book sale and needed help boxing and loading their purchases.
“I was really proud of the way the undergrads from Cornell chipped in to help,” Kokkelenberg says. “Because the chapter house was being prepped for remodeling there was no furniture and the brothers who stayed to help had to sleep on the floor.”
In all, 32 cartons of books were packed and loaded for shipment, totaling almost 1,700 books.
“Our brothers felt really good about knowing that within a matter of a couple of weeks these books would be in the hands of South African children, doctors, and nurses,” Kokkelenberg adds. “It was a god day to be an Alpha Sig.”
