In 32 years of coaching, Dublin Coffman High School baseball coach Tim R. Saunders, Rio Grande ’78, has put together a stellar résumé, winning 471 games, 12 league titles, six district championships, two regional titles and one state championship.

Saunders has coached three players who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft and dozens of future college players, and he has done such a good job building and maintaining Coffman’s field that it has received district, regional and national awards. His tireless passion for the game is the foremost reason he was inducted into the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Dec. 2 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Saunders began playing baseball at age seven. He lettered three times at Olentangy High School, graduating in 1977. Saunders went on to play three seasons at the University of Rio Grande before student-teaching and serving as an assistant coach at Portsmouth High School during his senior year. He then was an assistant coach for Indiana University under Bob Morgan in 1986. In Saunders’ two seasons, the Hoosiers went 92-28.

Saunders had already been inducted in three other halls of fame: the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (200 4), the Central District Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2005) and the Olentangy High School Athletics Hall of Fame (20 10).
