On January 1st, Harvey G. Stenger Jr., Cornell ’77, became the 7th President of Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York. Stenger leaves his position as the interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University at Buffalo. He had been in that position since April 2011.

A native of Auburn, New York, Stenger arrived at the University at Buffalo in 2006 as dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He is a chemical engineer by training, earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1979 and his doctorate in the same discipline from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983.

Prior to joining the administration at UB, Stenger was a professor at Lehigh University’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, where he also served as dean for six years and served terms as cochair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and director of the Environmental Studies Center. While dean, the college launched an award-winning Integrated Product Development program, expanded cooperative education programs, and received the largest gift ever made to Lehigh—$25 million—from P. C. Rossin to establish an endowment and name the P. C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Stenger has been honored as a distinguished alumnus of Cornell University; has received multiple awards at Lehigh for student advising, excellence in teaching and unusual promise of professional achievement; and been recognized in Buffalo and from professional associations for his teaching, mentorship, and public and professional service.

In 32 years of coaching, Dublin Coffman High School baseball coach Tim R. Saunders, Rio Grande ’78, has put together a stellar résumé, winning 471 games, 12 league titles, six district championships, two regional titles and one state championship.

Saunders has coached three players who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft and dozens of future college players, and he has done such a good job building and maintaining Coffman’s field that it has received district, regional and national awards. His tireless passion for the game is the foremost reason he was inducted into the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Dec. 2 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Saunders began playing baseball at age seven. He lettered three times at Olentangy High School, graduating in 1977. Saunders went on to play three seasons at the University of Rio Grande before student-teaching and serving as an assistant coach at Portsmouth High School during his senior year. He then was an assistant coach for Indiana University under Bob Morgan in 1986. In Saunders’ two seasons, the Hoosiers went 92-28.

Saunders had already been inducted in three other halls of fame: the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (200 4), the Central District Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2005) and the Olentangy High School Athletics Hall of Fame (20 10).
January 10, 2012 | 3:00 PM EST

The last donation came in via the internet at 11:52 p.m. on December 31st. When all of the final internet donations, checks, and stock transfers were added up, the goal of raising $166,000 in honor of our 166th Founders Day had been achieved.

486 Brothers from 96 of our 145 chapters (many first time donors and donors that had not given in years) helped the Foundation achieve this ambitious goal. Drew Thawley, Ohio Wesleyan ’94, Foundation CEO said, “it was not too many years ago that our total annual giving was in the range of what our alumni and undergrads achieved in the last two months. It was an ambitious goal achieved by ambitious Alpha Sigs.”

Funds received for the Campaign FOR EVERY NEW BROTHER are already being put to use and in the next Tomahawk Magazine we’ll list the names of each donor and detail just how their contribution impacted the organization. Thank you to those men who contributed towards this campaign. Raising that kind of money for the Old Gal is significant and is already helping our men become better men.

day 1.

We are going to long remember this year.

We are excited and prepared for what is going to be a great year ahead, so great that we wanted to post this brief message to say that this year – 2012 – is going to be Our Year!

Everything has started to come together for what is sure to be one of the most memorable and historic year’s for the Old Gal to date. What is in store… nearly six hundred Brothers coming together to grow, challenge, and be inspired; more men on more campuses then we have ever had in our history; new volunteer opportunities; new chapter resources; new undergraduate tools; and that’s just in January.

There has never been a better time to get engaged and be part of a movement. A movement to make the lives of men better. We will not hesitate or sit and wait for others to act – our moment is here – we have lives to change and visions to achieve.

Be An Alpha Sig.

Number of Members
How do you know how many members are being counted? We're going to use the number of members currently in the Officer Portal as of November 8, 2011. The number of men who need to donate $18.45 or amount that needs to be donated will be included in the packet that you receive from Fraternity Headquarters the week of November 14th.
The Drawing
The drawing will occur during a meal at the 2012 Academy of Leadership in Indianapolis, January 13-15. The winning chapter or colony will learn who will receive the 20 paid registrations and will be able to take the news back to their group that weekend.
CARMEL, INDIANA - Today, Alpha Sigma Phi stands among the best fraternities in America and garners national recognition for preparing our men with a cocurricular experience that gives them an advantage over others and makes them better prepared to enter the workforce.

As we approach our 166th Founders Day, we are now an organization of 50,000 members, united by a clear vision of purpose, potential, and commitment dedicated to the proposition that we need to create a stronger organization for future Alpha Sigs. This is now all possible because 166 years ago, three men sought to change the status quo and wanted to create an organization that added value to the lives of its members.

In honor of our 166th anniversary, this Founders Day you are being asked to contribute $166 towards the Campaign For Every New Brother. Your contribution will support those new members who saw something in Alpha Sigma Phi that they could not find anywhere else. They chose to join our organization because of you – had it not been for you, your time, and the effort that you put forth as an undergraduate then these new members may have never gone Greek, or if they had, may have never reached their full potential or been exposed to the opportunities that only Alpha Sigma Phi can offer.

Make A Gift Today

Please act now and make your gift of $166 today by visiting the Fraternity’s website or send your donation to Fraternity Headquarters. Your donation will support the education and development of our newest members – more than 750 have joined Alpha Sigma Phi just this fall. There is no better gift you can give to your Fraternity this Holiday season then to support this Campaign For Every New Brother. The impact of your gift will be put to use immediately and will help the Fraternity offer the best educational experience possible. This year’s Founders Day Campaign ends on December 31st.
Lindenwood Hosts Charity Softball Game

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 15, 2011 | 4:00 PM CDT

ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI - For the tenth year in a row the Lindenwood Chapter again hosted the Alumni vs. Active Softball Game. More than 30 alumni participated in the daylong event which included a bounce house for their children, coloring station, and lunch after the game. Lead by Chapter President Tyler Counts all of the undergraduates were in attendance and gave it their best effort, but couldn’t put one in the win column. The final score was 15 to 11 which meant the alumni were 10 - 0 having won every game since the event started in 2001.

What made the event even more special is that the chapter was able to raise $2,000 through donations to support Alfonso “Paco” Garcia, Lindenwood ’97 who is fighting Stage 1 Esophageal Cancer and has two children and a wife that is going to school and trying to work. Neither has been able to work while Paco is going through chemo. The Brothers voted unanimously to raise funds to help Paco and recently sent a check for $2,000, t-shirts, and a framed picture of all of the guys who participated in the game. TOMAHAWK NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 11, 2011 | 9:00 AM EDT

The Alpha Sigma Phi Educational Foundation, the largest unrestricted endowment in the Greek world, has officially changed its name to the Alpha Sigma Phi Foundation. To illustrate the name change, a new logo with a new tagline – Invest · Give · Build – has been created. The name simply states what the Foundation does, what the Foundation stands for, and for what the Foundation is striving to achieve.

It had become apparent through interactions with members that the former name, “Alpha Sigma Phi Educational Foundation,” was not well understood and inhibited a willingness by our members to invest, give, and build in the Fraternity. The word “educational” is limiting and does not accurately reflect the greater impact of today’s Foundation and all of the ways in which our members can be engaged. More significantly, the Foundation clearly caters to more than just those members who wish to give in the educational ambitions of its younger Alpha Sigs. The Foundation exists to provide all Alpha Sigs and those within the Alpha Sig community the opportunity to invest, give, and build in a fraternal experience that seeks to make good men better men.

In the 65 years since its creation, a lot has changed within the Foundation, the Fraternity, philanthropy, fraternal and educational fundraising, and communications. While not radical by any stretch of the imagination, this re-focusing will better position the Foundation to invest, give, and build in a better Fraternity.
TOMHAWK NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 11, 2011 | 9:00 AM EDT

MARIETTA, OHIO - Brothers from Marietta College’s Delta Chapter have formed the Delta Alumni Association for all alumni of the Delta Chapter. An active chapter from 1860 to 1993, Delta has a proud heritage with links missing in recent years. The idea of starting an alumni association was sparked following two recent reunions and the recognition of the chapter’s 150th anniversary in 2010. The objective, as with all alumni associations, is to renew and sustain the bonds of brotherhood experienced while at Marietta. TOMAHWK NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 11, 2011 | 9:00 AM EDT

CARMEL, INDIANA - Next semester, the Fraternity will begin expansion efforts at four colleges/universities we once called home - East Carolina University (Delta Eta Chapter), University of Charleston (Gamma Mu), Marietta College (Delta Chapter), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Beta Beta Chapter).

As you may have read in recent publications, the organization is growing and currently stands at 91 chapters, colonies, and interest groups. One of the organization’s priorities has been to return to campuses we once called home. With efforts at these three campuses, the total number of “closed” chapters drops to 61 which are 10 less than just two years ago.

If you would like to recommend a potential new member for any of these schools or you would like to learn more about volunteering to work with one of these re-starts, please send an email to tbtm@alphasigmaphi.org.
LIVESTRONG Day October 2nd

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 1, 2011 | 4:00 PM EDT

CARMEL, INDIANA - On October 2nd, members of Alpha Sigma Phi will wear yellow, participate in fundraisers, and raise awareness in communities across the United States about the fight against cancer. The date of this year’s Lance Armstrong Foundation LIVESTRONG Day holds special significance. October 2nd is the 13th anniversary of LIVESTRONG founder and chairman, cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong’s own cancer diagnosis.

"On Oct. 2, 1996 I was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer and my life changed forever," said Armstrong. "While cancer has fortunately left my body, it has not left my life. I believe in the obligation of the cured and am committed to sharing my story and doing everything I can to fight this disease on LIVESTRONG Day and every day."

In 2008, at the Fraternity’s 50th Grand Chapter in Louisville, Kentucky, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity adopted the Lance Armstrong Foundation, as the Fraternity’s national philanthropy. Since August 2008, chapters have raised thousands of dollars and donated hundreds of hours towards the fight against cancer.

LIVESTRONG Day events and activities -- from bike rides and "Wear Yellow" initiatives, to official proclamations and student fundraisers, to bake sales and beyond -- are designed to raise awareness of the need to prevent suffering and death due to cancer by focusing on prevention, access to screening and care, research and quality of life for survivors. These collective acts amplify a simple message of hope: Together, we can create a world without cancer.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation fights for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer today. There can be -- and should be -- life after cancer for more people. That's why the Foundation kicks in at the moment of diagnosis, giving people the resources and support they need to fight cancer head-on. They find innovative ways to raise awareness, fund research and end the stigma about cancer that many survivors face. They connect people and communities to drive social change, and call for state, national and world leaders to help fight this disease. Anyone anywhere can join the fight against cancer. Visit www.LIVESTRONG.org for more information.
National Hazing Prevention Week

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 | 4:00 PM EDT

CARMEL, INDIANA – This week Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Inc., like many fraternities across the nation, will take the opportunity during this prevention week to address the issue of hazing. Hazing policies exist to assist in the management of safe environments for our undergraduates to become indoctrinated into and maintain membership in our Greek organization.

Hazing, in its many and varied forms, permeates diverse settings throughout our society (e.g. social clubs, athletics, the military, the workplace, various youth groups, etc.); it is deeply imbedded in and reflective of pervasive cultural norms, making it difficult to eradicate. Moreover, it has gained acceptance among a number of students often because of their attitude toward team building and finding pleasure in putting each other in humiliating situations without any perspective of resulting consequences.

Four years ago, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity in conjunction with 20 international fraternities and sororities joined forces in a coalition to establish the Greek Anti-Hazing Hotline. The toll-free number is 1-888-NOT-HAZE (1-888-668-4293). The Greek Anti-Hazing Hotline is part of the ongoing attempt to end hazing on college campuses and particularly within Greek organizations. Here are a few common myths about hazing:

MYTH: Hazing is no more than foolish pranks that sometimes go awry.

FACT: Hazing is an act of power and control over others – it is victimization. Hazing is pre-meditated and NOT accidental. Hazing is abusive, degrading and often life-threatening.

MYTH: As long as there’s no malicious intent, a little hazing should be O.K.

FACT: Even if there’s no malicious “intent”, safety may still be a factor in traditional hazing activities that are considered to be “all in good fun.” For example, serious accidents have occurred during scavenger hunts and kidnapping trips. Besides, what purpose do such activities serve in promoting the growth and development of brothers?

MYTH: Hazing is an effective way to teach respect and develop discipline.

FACT: First of all, respect must be EARNED – not taught. Victims of hazing rarely report having respect for those who have hazed them. Just like other forms of victimization, hazing breeds mistrust, apathy and alienation.

MYTH: If someone agrees to participate in an activity, it can’t be considered hazing.

FACT: In states that have laws against hazing, consent of the victim can’t be used as defense in a civil suit. This is because even if someone agrees to participate in a potentially hazardous action it may not be true consent when considering the peer pressure and desire to belong to the group. This fraternity does not exist for the purpose of power and control of others, but rather an opportunity to build men, to make men better. It is because of our purpose that we strongly enforce a zero tolerance policy as it relates to hazing. Our undergraduates are encouraged to engage in dialog and participate in campus programming that address this issue.

Wake Forest Best in the Nation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEPTEMBER 14, 2011 | 4:00 PM EDT

CARMEL, INDIANA – The Beta Mu Chapter at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina is again the best chapter in the country. This is the second time the Beta Mu Chapter has won the Fraternity’s Grand Senior Presidents Trophy, the first being in 1978.

Wake Forest received their award at this summer’s Elevate – National Leadership Conference held on the campus of Bowling Green State University during the Cardinal and Stone Awards Banquet on Saturday, July 30, 2011.

Wake Forest far exceeded all areas of the Fraternity’s Annual Report and scored higher than any other chapter in the country by 15 points. What makes this even more impressive is that in the spring of 2009, the membership in this chapter dwindled to virtually nothing.

These men have established a positive reputation on campus and gained the respect of their peers and campus administrators. They successfully recruited 26 men this past academic year, volunteered 3,500 hours, and received two Manigault Awards earlier this evening – Manigault Award for Service and Philanthropy and the Manigault Award for Chapter Operations.

The Grand Senior President’s Award was established in 1960 and is the highest award a Chapter of the Fraternity can receive and recognizes the best chapters within the Fraternity.

This award is now given annually at either Grand Chapter or the Elevate – National Leadership Conference to one chapter within a large Greek system (more than 10 fraternities) and one chapter within a small Greek system (less than 10 fraternities), that best exemplify the Vision and Purpose of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, as documented on the Annual Report.

A few minutes before the chapter found out they had won the Grand Senior President’s Trophy they were already celebrating with Aaron Bullock, Wake Forest ’10 who was inducted into the Fraternity’s inaugural class of the to Better the Man Undergraduate Hall of Fame. It was then announced that Bullock had received the Frank F. Hargear Memorial Award, created in 1977 by the Grand Council, the award is given annually to an undergraduate brother in recognition of their outstanding contributions and is the highest award an undergraduate brother can receive.

Bullock served as Membership Education Director and President. Beyond his service to the chapter, he has been the Programming Director, Recruitment Chair and President of Wake Forest’s Interfraternity Council; a member of Order of Omega; an onsite Coordinator for the Ralph F. Burns Leadership Institute; Vice-Chair of the Grand Chapter Nominations Committee and a Student Orientation Advisor. Aaron is a senior Business Enterprise Management Major with Anthropology minor.
