FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 15, 2010 | 8:00 AM EST

The newest edition of Alpha Sigma Phi’s definitive membership manual has been released and is now in use. First printed in 1931, the manual has grown from primarily being an education manual for new members to being a true educational and reference tool that Alpha Sig brothers can use through life.

“This edition of to Better the Man follows the principles laid out by all the previous incarnations of Alpha Sigma Phi’s pledge education materials,” said Steve Latour, Central Michigan ’04, Director of Chapter Development. “As such, it is a testament to our storied and significant past and our vision for a bright and meaningful future.

“To Better the Man is used for new member educations and then serves as a guide throughout an undergraduate’s fraternity experience. The manual challenges brothers to learn, understand, and apply Alpha Sigma Phi’s values to their life every day, while they learn to create and perpetuate our brotherhood,” he said.

The manual is an excellent resource tool that chronicles our history and explains our unique history, structure, foundation, vision, and purpose of Alpha Sigma Phi that positively influences each of us in this brotherhood for life.

While newly initiated brothers receive a copy as part of their membership fee, for a limited time, undergraduates can order one for $20.00 plus a $5.00 shipping and handling fee. This offer expires May 1, 2010.

If you would like order a copy, please send a check to Fraternity Headquarters and indicate TBTM Manual on the memo line. Please also include a shipping address or call Fraternity Headquarters and place your order over the phone.
New Hampshire Receives Charter
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 15, 2010 | 8:00 AM EST

Alpha Sigma Phi made our way back to the University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, as the Beta Eta Chapter was re-chartered on January 23. First founded in 1931, the chapter closed in 1935 having initiated 58 men. The chapter roster nearly doubled last weekend when some 50+ new brothers were welcomed into the Mystic Circle.

In 2005, a group of University of New Hampshire undergraduates sought an alternative to Greek offerings on campus and started Chi Phi Alpha (CPA), with its mottos Triumph Over Adversity. In 2008, the group had grown significantly and was active on campus but did not have official recognition of the university because of its policy of not recognizing local fraternities. To ensure the longevity of their efforts, the men of CPA sought affiliation with a national fraternity. With the assistance of the university’s Greek Life staff, then CPA president, Remzi Kahya, and VP, Doug LaPointe, started an extensive review of national fraternities and chose to explore affiliation with Alpha Sigma Phi. By October 2009, the Colony had been approved to receive the charter of the Beta Eta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi.

More than 50 family members joined dozens of other friends and area Alpha Sig alumni in welcoming the new chapter. Grand Marshal John W. Tilden, Binghamton ‘93, presided over the chartering ceremonies. Past fraternity staff member, Nick Hudson-Swogger, Ohio Wesleyan ’96 and Past Grand Senior President Richard A. Dexter, Oregon State, ’60 as well.

The new Beta Eta Chapter promises to leave its mark on Alpha Sigma Phi nationally, as past president Will Frattini, New Hampshire ’10, has joined the fraternity staff as Coordinator of Chapter Development. Brother Frattini also experienced a special moment as his father Peter, joined the candidates as they were initiated into Alpha Sigma Phi.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 15, 2010 | 8:00 AM EST

The Alpha Mu Chapter at Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, was re-chartered after a 19-year absence from campus. The Alpha Mu Chapter, founded in 1939, was chartered again on January 16 with 18 new brothers initiated. The march to re-chartering began in 2006 with the formation of an Interest Group that became a Colony in 2007. The Grand Council approved the Colony for re-chartering during its October meeting.

Grand Councilor Scott Gallagher, Ohio Wesleyan ’93, awarded the chapter’s charter during the weekend activities. A number of Alpha Mu alumni attended as well as alumni from our other chapters at Purdue University and Ohio State University. Undergraduate brothers from the University of Akron, Bowling Green State University, and Stevens Institute of Technology were in attendance and several parents attended the chartering banquet as well.

Alpha Mu Chapter is home to more than 800 brothers and has produced many national leaders in Alpha Sigma Phi including Al Wise, Baldwin-Wallace ‘43 who served many years on the Grand Council and is a recipient of the 1984 Distinguished Service Award, and Dennis R. “Skip” Parks, Baldwin-Wallace, ’72, a past Grand Senior President.
Old Gal Celebrates 164th Anniversary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DECEMBER 4, 2008 | 2:00 PM EST

NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT - Our Brotherhood will recognize the Old Gal this Sunday, celebrating her achievements and the achievements of our Brothers. In honor of our founding, Brothers are encouraged to wear their badge. This year the Fraternity asked an alumnus to to share his thoughts on the significance of this anniversary - here in his words is our 2009 Founders Day message.

When I recently learned that the Fraternity’s theme for the coming year is aggressive growth – growth in number of chapters, and in number of members – my first reaction was confusion. How could we be focusing on growth in the midst of such great loss? After all, this past year witnessed the worst economic recession that many of us have ever experienced, with skyrocketing unemployment and foreclosures. Many students can no longer afford to continue their enrollment at colleges and universities, and many baby boomers have lost much of their retirement savings. In my own work as a city councilman in Maryland, I have been forced to slash budgets and imperil important services.

In times like these, we just hunker down and try to survive; we don’t try to grow, right?

Wrong. It is times of hardship that offer the greatest opportunities for growth. As our fraternal tradition teaches, when we are faced with our own limitations—our own mortality—we do not throw in the towel and give up. Rather, we harness these insights to inspire us to come together and build something greater and more lasting than any one individual can accomplish alone.

Anyone can lead when things are going well; anyone can thrive in a season of bounty. But the rigorous challenges of difficult times present a special chance for personal and spiritual growth. These times help us to set aside materialistic distractions and petty concerns, to remember what’s truly important and to recommit ourselves to our core values. Indeed, with so many more people in need, we are presented with even more chances to serve others.

Ancient Greek scholarship, from which many of our symbols and ceremonies originate, tells of the myth of Hercules and the Path of the Hero. Only by laboring and struggling through the most trying of circumstances did Hercules earn the title of “hero.” Similarly, in many of our religious faiths, only by suffering and sacrifice and service to others do we achieve enlightenment and spiritual reward.

And so, perhaps ironically, it is when things are toughest that we are most able to fulfill the high purposes of our sacred oath as brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi. There is no shortage of people in need, no dearth of good causes to assist. In our current epoch of struggle and adversity, the demand for leadership, compassion, and service is enormous. Our great Pinnacle of Fame may ascend endlessly heavenward, but we must never forget that it begins right here on the ground, reminding us that our task of Bettering the Man is a “bottom-up” endeavor. Our majestic Phoenix teaches the same lesson, by rising from the ashes before it can fly. Only by starting at the lowest point do we reach the highest heights.

So, in the midst of such dire straits, I am proud to see that our visionary Fraternity leaders refuse to squander this extraordinary opportunity to grow. Let us come together and rededicate our time and resources to helping our families, our Brotherhood, our communities, and our planet. Let us be a welcoming haven for men of good character who seek to do and be more, to rise above the troubles they encounter. Let us grow not only our membership but also our hearts and minds, and let us grow the presence of kindness and wisdom and peace in the world. That is my wish for you and your loved ones this holiday season.

Don’t be daunted by the magnitude of the task before us. Even small gestures will go a very long way for the countless people who are desperately in need. Bankers and politicians and generals and academics will study the troubles of our day and try to determine the causes of the many challenges we now face. Those causes may never be truly understood. But when we act, my brothers, the results will be well-known.

I am honored to share my reflections with you on this Founders Day, as I have done with the brothers of my Epsilon Delta Chapter at the University of Maryland for over ten years. I look back on the last year with a sense of relief that some of our worst struggles are behind us. But more importantly, I look forward to the year ahead with optimism and hope that despite ongoing challenges—or perhaps because of them—it will be a wonderful time for all of us, and especially for the Old Gal, to grow.

Happy Founders Day.
Yours in the Mystic Circle, Ryan Spiegel, Maryland ’98
READING, PENNSYLVANIA – Albright College's Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity is raising money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation with its third annual Pond-a-Thon.

More than a dozen fraternity brothers have been taking shifts wading around in the college's Sylvan Pond and collecting donations to mark Armstrong's LIVESTRONG Week.

The event started Wednesday and wraps up Friday, October 2nd at 5 p.m., which is LIVESTRONG Day. All proceeds will benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which supports local programs that benefit cancer survivors.

The organization was founded in 1997 by Armstrong, a bicycle racer who survived cancer and has since won the Tour de France seven times.

Last year, the fraternity raised nearly $1,000, chapter president Brian Benusa said. This year, the goal is $2,500. "The pond is a huge icon at the college and I think people enjoy seeing us splash around in the water, having a good time," Benusa said. "We decided to do it earlier this year. We didn't want to get frostbite or anything,"

Throughout the week, members of the fraternity also have been raising money and cancer awareness by distributing pamphlets, selling LIVESTRONG wristbands and starting a donation wall in the campus center.
LIVESTRONG Day, Oct. 2nd

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 2, 2009 | 8:00 AM EDT

CARMEL, INDIANA - On Friday, October 2nd, members of Alpha Sigma Phi will wear yellow, participate in fundraisers, and raise awareness in communities across the United States about the fight against cancer. The date of this year’s Lance Armstrong Foundation LIVESTRONG Day holds special significance. October 2nd is the 13th anniversary of LIVESTRONG founder and chairman, cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong’s own cancer diagnosis.

"On Oct. 2, 1996 I was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer and my life changed forever," said Armstrong. "While cancer has fortunately left my body, it has not left my life. I believe in the obligation of the cured and am committed to sharing my story and doing everything I can to fight this disease on LIVESTRONG Day and every day."

In 2008, at the Fraternity’s 50th Grand Chapter in Louisville, Kentucky, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity adopted the Lance Armstrong Foundation, as the Fraternity’s national philanthropy. Since August 2008, chapters have raised thousands of dollars and donated hundreds of hours towards the fight against cancer.

LIVESTRONG Day events and activities -- from bike rides and "Wear Yellow" initiatives, to official proclamations and student fundraisers, to bake sales and beyond -- are designed to raise awareness of the need to prevent suffering and death due to cancer by focusing on prevention, access to screening and care, research and quality of life for survivors. These collective acts amplify a simple message of hope: Together, we can create a world without cancer.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation fights for the 28 million people around the world living with cancer today. There can be -- and should be -- life after cancer for more people. That's why the Foundation kicks in at the moment of diagnosis, giving people the resources and support they need to fight cancer head-on. They find innovative ways to raise awareness, fund research and end the stigma about cancer that many survivors face. They connect people and communities to drive social change, and call for state, national and world leaders to help fight this disease. Anyone anywhere can join the fight against cancer.
