CARMEL, INDIANA – Sfcott F. Gallagher, MD, Ohio Wesleyan ’93 has been appointed to serve as a Grand Councilor, making him the third brother from the Epsilon Chapter to serve on the Grand Council. His term officially began at the Council’s recent meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana this past weekend. Scott fills the seat vacated by Roberto Coquis, American ’90 who resigned from the Council a few months ago.

Scott is a re-founding father of the Epsilon Chapter at Ohio Wesleyan University that was re-chartered in 1993. Shortly after graduation, he became a driving force to establish the Central Ohio Chartered Association, to provide alumni assistance to all chapters in central Ohio. Since its founding in 2001, he has been an active member of the Epsilon Housing Corporation Board of Directors, serving as Vice President and President for three years each.

Nationally, Scott has served as Society Facilitator at many Grand Chapters and National Leadership Conferences; he has also served as Lead Facilitator at multiple Ralph F. Burns Leadership Institutes. In 1996, Scott joined the National Ritual Committee and assisted with the four year project reorganizing the rituals of Alpha Sigma Phi. He has a strong belief in our Ritual and has helped to coordinate and present the Ritual Exemplification at nearly every national meeting since his initiation in 1993.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the undergraduates and alumni of Alpha Sigma Phi and believe that the ritual ceremonies, which we all share as brothers, are the foundation upon which our society is built. I will look to those rituals for answers to the issues that may come before the Grand Council,” said Gallagher.

Dr. Gallagher received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and, subsequently, completed his General Surgery training at The University of South Florida College of Medicine, where he joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, now USF Health. Scott also serves as Vice-Chief for the Department of Surgery at Tampa General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for USF Health. Dr. Gallagher is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; he is also a member of multiple professional organizations including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Gallagher’s main interest is in training the doctors and surgeons of the future; he has become a thought leader in his specialty and outcomes research focusing on patient safety and access to care; he has authored more than fifty peer-reviewed publications related to laparoscopic, bariatric, and endocrine surgery including landmark papers on patient safety and the amelioration of obesity-related co-morbidities as well as healthcare cost savings related to surgery and outcomes.

Scott’s appointment to the Grand Council continues through August 2010 at which time he is eligible to apply for a full term of service. Scott resides in Tampa, Florida with his wife, Linda, and his son, Mitchell.
